Kue Janda Kukus (?)

Well, I'm not trying to be funny but my ex-biology (yeah, I'm not taking bio anymore) teacher really suggested that name for my bolu kukus. It sounds catchy and very unique. But honestly I don't know whether using "Janda" is appropriate or not hahaha. Actually the first name that popped up in my mind was "Talas Zebra". But since the [real] name hasn't been decided yet, let's just call it bolu kukus.

Btw... I'm talking about my own creation of Bolu Kukus for PLH assignment here.
It's proudly invented by me, eventho I'm using an instant powder *oops
Normally I don't bake nor cook but after got praised several times for the tasty and pretty steamed sponge [cup]cake, I actually enjoy that. I still have an-oven-curse tho. I never succeeded when baking cakes or cookies by using oven. That's why I prefer to steam, muehehe.

The idea of the assignment is to start our very own business by making a food creation, mainly using local ingredients like talas (taro), tape, ketan (sticky rice), then selling it to people around us. We also have to get good testimonies from the school director and principal in order to score perfect in the taste aspect.

I'm in a group of five with Metta, Rinie, Adit and Grego. I was so damn confused at first because no one in our group could really cook. Well, Metta can cook but she never bake and there's too much ingredients that she mustn't use due to her vegetarianism. Then the idea of making bolu kukus popped up. I didn't have a single hope to succeed the challenge because I read too much about the failures when making bolu kukus on the net. The enlightenment finally came when I was shopping with Ibu. I saw the instant powder to make bolu kukus! Success guaranteed. Muahaha.

After discussing with my group, they accepted the idea of making bolu kukus talas and we divided the works. I make the bolu kukus, and the rest will do the selling. The first capital was less than ninety thousand rupiah. We used the money to invest on 12pcs of metal mold, 200pcs of paper cups, 2 packs of margarine, and a bottle of taro paste [flavocol]. We only have to buy the powder and eggs every time we make the cake.

Here I am giving you the full recipe of my pretty cake.

Actually I didn't take enough pictures. That's why I stuffed words onto the pictures aboves. Hehehe.

still doubting the taste? Here are few of my friends customers.

I sell it for Rp 2,000 each. I can make 20-30pcs bolu kukus from a pack of powder, and it's always sold out. Now I'm started to think about bringing this business to a serious level, muahaha.

I love the fact that I make profit from the works that I did. Well eventho I've sold a lot of things to make money, I never really make the things by myself. Usually I bought items from the wholesaler and sold them to my friends or online. I didn't care about the process but the profit I made. But after experiencing this (to make and to sell bolu kukus), I can tell that it's more satisfying if you're involved more and pay more attention to the process itself.

Now I can predict that the happiest person on earth reading this post will be Bapak. He really loves to spread the entrepreneurship virus. He even told me few times to open my own store and start doing business seriously. He encourages me to learn how to make money since I was very young. I love the suggestions but I still need time and a lot of feedback to keep doing better.

I realized how this PLH assignment really taught me a lot than just innovating food by using of local ingredients. Ah, I need to say a very special thanks to my PLH teacher for loving our bolu kukus and even thinking to try making it too. Honestly it's really motivating for me.^^
